Retinol y labios, el perfect match que todavía no conocías

Retinol on lips the perfect match you haven't heard of yet

Regenerate the skin by improving and smoothing its texture. Discover what this ingredient can do for you (and your lips).

One thing is clear. And that is that as you get to know yourself, as you gain years and experience, instead of increasing the amount of make-up in your bag, the opposite happens. You realise that you can "live" with less as long as you choose well. Mascara, the famous concealer (or corrector)  and lipstick are the basics you can't do without, the Must-Haves... But if there's one thing you've learned from the smart beauty movement, it's that colour is useless without treatment to back it up. Thanks in large part to that magical combination of active ingredients - such as hyaluronic acid, vitamin C and retinol - by putting on your make-up, you will be taking care of your skin.

Lips with colour and (now) also with retinol

Smart Beauty contributes to the new beauty trends that emerge almost every month. And although it's sometimes hard to keep up, that's what this Journal is for. One of them is the rise of tinted lip balms, those lip serums that are a 2-for-1 make-up and treatment. Not only do they give you a deep red or bright pink shade, but they also moisturise, nourish and repair. After all, your lips are one of the most delicate parts of your body. The skin is thinner, more delicate and more exposed to external factors such as the extreme temperature changes that are so common these days. This is why it is important to incorporate specific ingredients that help to improve its elasticity and texture. Hyaluronic acid, the name most associated with lips for its great hydrating power, has been joined (and rightly so) by retinol. The anti-ageing fame of this vitamin A derivative is already legendary, but its use in lipsticks is the extra you weren't expecting.

You know the benefits of retinol on the skin, but what about the lips?

"We know that retinol has very beneficial effects on the skin. Sometimes, the question arises as to whether it can be used in 'special' locations such as the eye contours, lips or neckline. The answer is yes. “Retinol will activate the production of collagen, elastin and fibrin, causing an anti-ageing effect", explains Dr Iris González, a specialist in Dermatology at the ENEA Clinic.

It should not be forgotten that expression lines appear mainly around the eye contours and lips. Talking, laughing, or gesticulating encourages the appearance of these small wrinkles: the (wrongly) called "barcode" or "marionette lines", depending on the shape they take. And, as is often the case, the best advice in these cases is prevention. From the use of sunscreens to avoiding habits that accelerate the skin's ageing process - such as the abuse of tobacco or alcoholic beverages. A good facial routine and multi-benefit make-up, those hybrid products - many of them with a serum texture - combine formulation with skincare.

Dr González added that retinoids "increase the thickness of the superficial layer of the skin (epidermis), which promotes its barrier function." Like other parts of the body, the mouth also undergoes transformations over the years, including the loss of moisture, plumpness or thinness of the skin covering the lips.

Retinyl Acetate and hyaluronic acid are the perfect combination to achieve greater hydration and texture and improve the appearance of expression wrinkles.

What about hyaluronic acid?

For doctors specialised in dermatology, the combination of retinol and hyaluronic acid is perfect because hyaluronic acid is "one of the most hydrating molecules in existence". It is also an ingredient that is perfectly compatible with other ingredients and covers the skin's most basic needs: it prevents water loss, helps repair the skin and ensures good skin health.

It's time to discover that your lipstick can do more for you than you thought it could.
