¿Por qué maquillarse para una videollamada es diferente? 5 aspectos que (quizás) no tenías en cuenta

Why would make-up choices for a video call be any different? 5 aspects you may not have

01.12.2023

A professional make-up artist gives you the keys to the perfect make-up for a video call. From lighting to what products to use when you're short of time.

You already know the story by heart. The pandemic changed many of your habits and customs. Even to this day, it has affected your personal and working life. Was your calendar as full of video calls in 2019 as it is now? The phrase "I seem to live in a continuous Zoom" has been repeated a lot in recent years, and rightly so, but to combine virtual meetings with teleworking, and even more factors (and concerns) enter into the equation. "What should I wear?" "Should I keep my pyjama bottoms on?" "Should I wear my hair up or down?" And the same applies to the make-up. You may not know that the way you apply your make-up when you sit in front of the screen should not be the same as when you go out on the street. The light, the framing. There are many aspects to take into account before you accept the call in progress. Marta Arce, professional Makeup Artist and Co-Creative Director of U/1ST, gives you the keys to learning how to adapt your make-up to the dreaded video calls.

Fact #1. Your face is more exposed in a video call

Although it may seem obvious, you may not have thought it through. One of the main aspects to bear in mind is that, in a video call, the other person "is not seeing your whole body, they only see your face framed on the screen.  So, your eyes, your lips, your skin... are going to be more exposed or visible than in other situations," says Arce. According to the expert, this fact tends to provoke two situations: " Those who usually wear make-up will probably do it more for that call. And those who don't usually wear make-up at all will probably apply a few strategic touches to make themselves feel more favoured" in front of the computer.

Fact #2. Lighting matters. Before and during the meeting

It has always been said that lighting is crucial to achieving the best results. Too bright or too dark can completely change your look. "It is very important to do your make-up in natural light, but also to take this into account during our meeting. That's why it's always a good idea to place your computer in the best-lit area of your home or office so that you look your best," says Marta.

It is also advisable to avoid overhead lighting. If the spotlight comes from above, it will create more shadows, especially under the eyes, thus highlighting dark circles under the eyes. Another factor to consider is whether the meeting will take place during the day or later in the evening, as the light can be harsher and create unwanted contrasts or chiaroscuro. So, what is the perfect combo? Marta Arce is certain: "Diffused light is the best of all because it softens and can blur some imperfections. To achieve this, you have to find a white wall, let the natural light fall on it and bounce it off your face indirectly".

Fact #3. Keep an eye on the camera position

It may not affect your make-up routine, but it will affect the result on screen. Just like overhead lighting, the position of your camera can create unflattering highlights and shadows. That's why it's best to position your computer (or mobile phone) with a frontal view at eye level or slightly above. This will help you avoid overhead shots, which can create an unwanted "double-chin" effect.

Fact #4. A defined look that invites communication

It may be a hackneyed phrase, but it is true that the eyes are the mirror of the soul. In a way, at least. And when you are in front of a screen where your face is framed in a box, even more so. "The expression of the eyes is crucial to how you communicate, especially when you don't have anyone physically in front of you," says the make-up artist.

HOW TO ACHIEVE THIS?

A few dabs of mascara are all it takes to achieve a more defined, open look. If you want to enhance it even more, the make-up artist's trick is to comb and set the eyebrows with clear mascara.

Another tip to define the look is to use a dark shade at the base of the lashes to give more intensity to the look and a lighter one in the centre of the eyelid to illuminate. Earth tones have a more natural finish and are perfect for business meetings.

Fact #5. Objective: fresh and healthy skin

Another essential product for a video call is make-up foundation. "You don't need to use it all over your face, but you do need to use it on specific areas that you want to even out or conceal (such as blemishes, redness, etc.). And if you prefer to apply your foundation all over your face, be careful with your neck, neckline or hands because when you gesticulate, the colour changes will be much more noticeable," warns Arce.

BETTER WITH VITAMIN C

For the expert, the ideal choice is a make-up base with vitamin C to enhance the glowing effect on the skin. The result is a brighter, healthier face.

2-in-1 PRODUCTS WHEN TIME IS SHORT

Blush is a great ally to add a little colour and accentuate the features. "This will prevent the face from looking flat on screen," she explains. And if you don't have much time before going online, you can use the same product to add a little colour to your lips. Or the other way around, use your lipstick as a 2-for-1 product. "Just dab with your middle finger to get that 'bitten mouth' effect and use what's left over as blush for the cheek area”, she suggests.

All you need to do now is check your diary to see when the next meeting is so that you can be prepared and put all the advice into practice.
